1st ANNUAL REUNION OF RHODESIANS, AT “KONSTANTINOS PALACE” HOTEL, IN KARPATHOS
On Thursday 18th of August 2011, at the beautiful Island of Karpathos, we, about 25 Rhodesians mainly of Gwelo origin, had our 1st Annual reunion. The successful meeting took place at the “Konstantinos Palace” Hotel, at the city of Karpathos (Pigadia) at 20.30. After a delicious dinner, we had a toast to all Rhodesians Worldwide, and Mr. Achilles Pelidis gave us a meaningfull s peech about the incalculable offer of the Educational and Cultural Association of Rhodesians with Karpathian origin “EPISKOPI”, to Karpathos and the Greek Nation. We were all surprised to hear that in 1941, during the second world War, the Rhodesian Association “EPISKOPI” offered £ 15.000 English pounds, and 15 bales of clothes to the Greek Government, and other interesting facts. Other interesting points of concern were also raised, but I am unable to disclose these, due to lack of space. Then Mrs. Mary Papayannis introduced each and every present member, and their family’s involvement in the Association. On Saturday morning, the 21st of August, at 10.00 a.m, at the pool deck of the same Hotel, a breakfast meeting was opened up to all Zimbabweans from all other cities. We are hoping for a larger turnout next year Greetings to all members of PAZZIMO, from all of us in Karpathos.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Hellenic Air Force Academy (Greek: Σχολή Ικάρων, abbr. ΣΙ) is a military academy responsible for supplying the Hellenic Air Force with professionally trained pilots, aircraft engineers and air defence inspectors. It was founded in 1919 as the Military Academy of Aviation (Στρατιωτική Σχολή Αεροπλοΐας. 1940s
On October 1940 the academy was transferred to the city of Argos. One and a half years later, on April 1941, the academy was again transferred to the Middle-East and later on to South Rhodesia,
where it operated normally from September 1941 until the summer of
1946. Training of Greek pilots during the war was performed by British
units in Middle-East and South Rhodesia.
Twelve young Greek air force pilots were killed and are buried in the Military Cemetery of Bulawayo.
A few pilots remained in Rhodesia after the war.
A plaque in memory of the fallen Royal Hellenic Airforce Pilots may be found on the wall on the right behind the psaltiri in the Greek Orthodox Church, Agia Triada, in Harare.

Since the beginning of March, 1942, this
officer has destroyed 4 and probably destroyed a further 3 hostile
aircraft. With complete indifference to odds against him, he presses
home his attacks with skill and courage. In one day alone, he destroyed
2 enemy fighters and 1 bomber. He has set an outstanding example
Bar To DFC. London Gazette # 35621, 3 July 1942 RAF Volunteer Reserve,
This officer has displayed exceptional skill
and gallantry in combat. He has destroyed at least 10 enemy- aircraft, 2
of which he destroyed in one engagement. Undeterred by superior
numbers of attacking aircraft, he presses home his attacks with great
determination.
Distinguished Service Order. London Gazette # 36777, 31 October 1944
Since being awarded the Distinguished Flying
Cross this Officer has participated in very many sorties during which
much damage has been inflicted on the enemy. Shipping, radio stations,
oil storage tanks, power plants and other installations have been
amongst the targets attacked. On one occasion, he led a small formation
of aircraft against a much superior force of enemy fighters. In the
engagement 5 enemy aircraft were shot down, 2 of them by Squadron
Leader Plagis. This officer is a brave and resourceful leader whose
example has proved a rare source of inspiration. He has destroyed 16
hostile aircraft.
John Plagis
John Agorastos Plagis was born in Hartley, Southern Rhodesia, on the
10th of March 1919. At the outbreak of World War 2 he tried to join
the Rhodesian Air Force but was rejected since, because his parents
were Greek, officially he was under Greek citizenship. The RAF at the
time, desperately in need of pilots, could not be bothered with such
minor details. He was accepted as a Greek citizen in 1940. He completed
his training in January 1942 and transferred to No 249 Squadron, stationed
on the besieged island of Malta. More... by John
